Located in the region of mid-Atlantic area, Maryland is one of the American states that are among the smallest but with a very high population. On the other hand sports medicine is a discipline in medicine that is specialized to deal with all the conditions affecting sportspeople and how they can be treated or prevented. Currently, most people have been made aware of how important exercise and physical fitness is to a good and health living. Initially not much was needed for a person to become a doctor, a general practitioner interested games would qualify to do the task or even a person with as low as a diploma in sport-medicine was qualified for the task. Today very high qualifications must be obtained to get a position as a specialist.

Before one is approved as a special doctor, the person must go through the medical training to become a general doctor. After that they are required to choose a specialty to pursue that is closely related to games before further pursuing a fellowship to attain full specialty in this field. A good understanding of muscular and skeletal system is necessary for this group because most injury involve that system. The ability to detect and treat conditions that could impair the physical activity of patients is mandatory in the practice.

There are certain conditions that are very commonly encountered in sports medicine. One is a concussion which is a term referring to a heavy head trauma that causes the brain inside the structure of the skull to move with a lot of force that makes the cells active resulting in a seizure. Muscle cramps is also quite common and is defined by a condition that causes muscles to contract involuntarily with a lot of force and without relaxing generating intense pain.

The rupture of anterior cruciate ligament in the knee joint commonly occurs in football. It results when the foot is fixed to the ground surface while trying to rotate the leg at the knee. Ankle sprains also occur where the ligaments of the ankle joint get overstretched from pressure or strain leading to pain.
