We love to read from multiple sources to obtain healthy lifestyle advice, not restricting ourselves to the Zone Plan. Dr. Soram often offers useful advice. His look is a little unconventional since we live in the US, but what he claims is basic and sensible.
Below we provide a summary of his advice regarding the 6 top most unhealthy foods you can eat:
1.Soda
A regular can of soda has 10 teaspoons of sugar, 150 calories, 40mg of caffeine. Also included are food colors and sulphites. Diet sodas skip the teaspoons of sugar, but replace it with the even-more-unhealthy artificial sweeteners. An alarming research in the journal Pediatrics discovered that 56-85% of children drink at least one soft drink per day, and 20% of adolescent males drink four or more sodas per day.
"Parents and health officials need to recognize soft drinks for what they are - liquid candy-and do everything they can to return those beverages to their former role as an occasional treat," says the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). We have imparted in our kids that soda is a treat that you order in a restaurant.
2.Potato Chips & French Fries
These well-liked snack foods include acrylamide, a known carcinogen and neurotoxin that is formed when foods are baked or fried at high temperatures.
When CSPI conducted tests on some popular brands of French fries and chips, they found that the acrylamide in a large order of fast food fries was at least 300 times the amount allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in a glass of water.
When possible, buy the baked variety.
3. Doughnuts
Break a doughnut down and you'll find nothing more than refined sugar and flour, artificial flavors and partially hydrogenated oil that is loaded with trans fats. They have no redeeming qualities at all.
If the sweet snack is something you just love as a treat, after that make them from scratch at home. Buy a donut maker and you can skip the artificial flavors and the oil and trans fats.
4.Coffee Cake & Other Baked Goods
This includes all packaged baked goods, including packaged cakes and biscuit mixes. They almost always contain high amounts of trans fats and other artificial additives. They often have the highest level of trans fats because they are not only made from hydrogenated oils, but they're fried in them too.
If you don't wish to stop that morning treat, choose baked products from your local bakery, they don't work with the hydrogenated oil because it does not need a long shelf life.
5. Luncheon Meats or Hot Dogs
Processed meats like hot dogs, sausages, bacon, pepperoni and others contain a carcinogenic precursor known as sodium nitrite.
"Sodium nitrite is a dangerous, cancer-causing component that has no place in the human food supply," says nutritionist Mike Adams, author of the Grocery Warning Manual. According to research that followed 200,000 people for seven years, individuals who ingested the most processed meats (hot dogs and sausage) showed a 67% higher risk of pancreatic cancer over those who consumed little or none.
But if you will have that desire, the good news is that you will find various types of nitrite-free meats in most health food stores.
6. Canned Soup
These are generally the conventional canned soups, not the fancy new labels which are out or any of the organic kinds that have turn out to be well liked. Almost all canned soups possess high levels of trans fats, sodium and artificial preservatives like MSG. One cup of canned soup may have almost 1,000 milligrams of salt, which is disturbing since the dietary guidelines recommend consuming no more than 2,400 milligrams in an entire day.
Some of the natural and organic brands may be a good alternative. But the easiest way to stay away from this overload of sodium is to make your own homemade soups.
We hope you can remember the 6 list of unhealthy foods and avoid them for you and your family.
Until next time
