Cooking with spice not only adds flavor, but certain spices contain a variety of health benefits that make everyday use ideal. Adding salt can increase the chances for developing high blood pressure and other heart related ailments. Diabetes is on the rise and controlling blood sugar levels is key to maintaining a healthy body. Cancers are also on the rise. The health benefits of spices range from eliminating disease, reducing the chance for obtaining cancer, and even relieving pain from chronic conditions.

For those who like it hot, chili peppers can add heat and also contain many health boosting properties. The capsaicin in peppers can promote heart health, offer pain relief, and there is even evidence that it can help men ward off prostate cancer. Habaneros are among the hottest peppers in the world, but for a milder heat try adding jalapenos to sauces or on sandwiches, and cherry peppers are another way to enjoy a mild heat.

Oregano is great when paired with Italian dishes but its health properties are just as amazing as the taste. This is a natural anti-bacterial so it can fight off infections. Use it by adding it to pasta sauces or sprinkle it on your pizza.

Cinnamon not only tastes delicious but it can help to maintain healthy arteries and lower cholesterol. I can also help to manage blood sugars so there are no unhealthy spikes which will aid with weight management. It of course tastes delicious in baked goods, but try it in coffee, sprinkled on your oatmeal or sweet potatoes.

Parsley is not just a pretty decoration for your plate. Many do not know that it can be eaten and is added in many dishes. It can help decrease bad breath and prevent plaque in the arteries. It may also help those who suffer from kidney stones by making the stone easier to pass.

Ginger can also reduce inflammation and so it is good for relieving swelling and pain from arthritis. It is good for decreasing nausea as well. It may also stop blood clots from forming so it is helpful for those about to undergo a surgical procedure or for those at high risk of forming blood clots. Ginger can be chopped, shredded, or used in powder form in sauces or soups.

Thyme is an antiseptic and antibacterial. It is so powerful that it can help rid the body of the infection known as MRSA. MRSA used to be an infection that was usually acquired while staying in a hospital, but lately it has been finding its way into the community. This infection is extremely resistant to antibiotics, but thyme has been known to assist in killing this infection.

There is no doubt that spices increase the flavor of all your favorite foods. Since they are all natural, you can use a lot or a little, depending on your taste. The fact that there so many health benefits of spices is just a bonus. So go ahead and stock that spice rack with all your favorite spices, and take comfort in the knowledge that you are doing something great for your health.
