Mobile Drug Testing Offer Myriad Advantages

By Erna Gutierrez

Mobile drug testing is a phrase that describes the process of testing individuals for substance abuse at their place of work, their private residence, or in the school they attend. A trained professional arrives at one of the aforementioned sites and collects urine, hair follicles, or saliva samples from those who are being screened for drug or alcohol abuse.

Substance abuse at work is an occurrence linked to serious repercussions. Workers who are compromised by the presence of alcohol or drugs in their systems have a greater likelihood for accidents than those who do not use such substances. Therefore, those who abuse prescriptions, street drugs or alcohol are placing other employees as well as themselves at risk for harm. This often results in lost profits for the business owner.

Additionally, employees working under the influence of such substances are usually less productive than those who do not use alcohol or drugs. As a result, the owner of the business loses money every time an under productive employee is paid for work that he or she did not perform. It is also a fact that substance abusers typically miss work more frequently than their sober counterparts, which can result in production backlog.

Even if no accidents or injuries take place, substance abusers frequently engage in verbal or physical battles with fellow employees. This can negatively affect the job performance of the other individuals who work for the company. Those using drugs or alcohol at work may also offend customers through inappropriate behavior.

Through drug tests, employers can increase profits and create a safer work environments. Such testing will bring to light the number of workers who are not complying with their employer's substance abuse policies: if employees know a random test may be performed, those who are serious about their careers may discontinue using the aforementioned substances.

Insurance companies in some areas provide significant discounts to business owners who maintain a drug-free work environment. This is very advantageous to proprietors who offer health coverage to their workers, as the price they must pay for such policies is reduced simply because they have drug screening in place for new and current employees.

Many companies prefer on-site testing, as it allows little time for a worker to come up with a way to manipulate the test results, which is an activity that is attempted more often than most individuals realize. Additionally, once the mobile unit arrives, workers will not have time to consume any substance that may tweak the results of the test, nor will the person be able to send another individual to provide the specimen.

Although such tests are most often utilized in the workplace, schools also benefit from testing of this type. In some learning institutions, athletics students are randomly tested to discourage the use of steroids or similar substances. No matter what reason one has for pursuing mobile drug testing, it is obvious that this activity offers myriad benefits, and for this reason it is something business professionals and employers should consider.
